Detailing Clay Bars and Decontaminants

Have you ever gone through a full detail and still not been happy with the results? You've washed all the dirt and road grime away safely, you've put down a layer of premium wax, and then you're still left with a dull shine that you just can't get to pop! The problem may not lay in your technique, it may be in the paint itself. Over time your paint is bombarded by millions of microscopic contaminants that latch on your paints perfect finish, diminishing its beauty. This contamination normally can't be seen, but you can certainly feel it. Simply run your hand across the paint and you'll feel a grit almost like sandpaper, you'll know its time to decontaminate your paint.

Unfortunately, the only way to prevent this contamination would be to put your car in a sealed bubble, and that isn't very realistic. So, the best course of action for you paint is a routine decontamination. This is a two-step process of a chemical decontaminate to remove embedded iron deposits, followed by a mechanical method to remove the remaining contamination. By using this two-step approach you can ensure you've removed anything that can hinder your shine!

Detailing Clay and Paint Contamination

Every car finish shares a common enemy: pollution. It relentlessly pursues your car from the second it leaves the factory until your car meets its ultimate demise. It's in the air we breathe, it's on the roads we drive, and it attaches to your car's paint, where it bonds and begins a process of oxidation. So where does detail clay come in?

When contaminants get a solid grip on your car's paint, washing will not remove them. Pre-wax cleaners will remove some of the paint contamination, but not all. To completely rid your paint of contamination you have two choices: use a car polishing compound, which removes layers of your clear coat, or use a detailing clay bar.

Detail clay isn't a polish or a compound.  A detailing clay bar is a surface cleaner that smoothes the paint and removes bonded contamination that harms your car's paint finish.

Uses for Detailing Clay

Detail clay is not a cure-all or meant to replace car polishing. It's a great detailing tool for quickly and easily removing surface paint contamination.

One of the many reasons for using a clay bar is paint over-spray, though you may want to get guidance from a car detailing professional if the over-spray is particularly heavy. Tree sap and tar specks can also be safely and effectively removed with a clay bar.

Another great use for detail clay is the removal of brake dust, also known as brake dust contamination. This brake dust attaches to painted rear bumpers and adjoining surfaces but can be removed by using detailing clay.
